What is WtE or EfW?

Waste-to-energy (WtE) or energy-from-waste (EfW) is the process of generating energy in the form of electricity and/or heat from the primary treatment of waste, or the processing of waste into a fuel source. WtE is a form of energy recovery. Most WtE processes generate electricity and/or heat directly through combustion, or produce a combustible fuel commodity, such as methane, methanol, ethanol or synthetic fuels. Waste to energy plays an important role in waste management because of its ability to take discarded material that wouldn’t normally be reused and turn it into something that can, such as refuse-derived fuel (RDF).

Key Points

The main sources of energy are municipal solid waste and industrial waste. This mixed waste naturally contains various components of different sizes and with variable energy content. Therefore, it is quite important to sort valuable metals and other nonflammable materials out before combustion increases the calorific value of the waste fuel and the WtE plant’s energy production.  Meanwhile, the shredding of this material also plays a critical role in WtE or EfW Plant, as the quality of the finished RDF often depends on the feedstock being fed into the system. Given the variety of materials that can enter a conversion facility, there is no one-size-fits-all method for shredding waste prior to processing.
