What is biomass power plant?

Unlike traditional power plants that relays on coal or gas, a biomass power plant runs entirely on biomass. Biomass is a renewable organic resource that comes from plants and animal waste, and we can use it as fuel (including in boilers for homes).

When biomass power plants burn fuel, they create steam that turns turbines to generate electricity. It is very similar to coal or gas-fuelled power plants, the main difference just the fuel they used. There’re many different technologies for biomass combustion for power and heat. The modern trend is to use grates in small boilers, fluidized bed technology with bubbling beds for medium sized plant, and circulating beds for larger installations; gasification is still in its infancy.

Biomass power plants don’t rely on intermittent power. Whereas wind power requires wind in order to work, biomass power plants simply use more biomass to keep the electricity flowing. Solar power operates similarly to wind power, once no enough sunshine, it doesn’t work as well.

This mode of electricity production in biomass power plant is a neutral carbon balance, because it rejects a relatively low quantity of CO2, similar to the quantity consumed by the plants during their growth phase.
